Various Salsa Dancing Styles
The great thing about salsa dancing is that there are so many styles to learn, including:
- Mambo – Its high energy and enticing rhythms make the Mambo an entertaining form of salsa. Called one of the most vibrant types of Latin dancing, the Mambo has strong hip movements, quick footwork, unique arm wraps, turns, and rhythmic body actions.
- Salsa On 2 – Often referred to as “New York Style,” Salsa On 2 is when the dancers take their break step on the second beat. It has a different feel than counting on 1 because the footwork expresses the rhythm of the percussion instruments.
- Cumbia – Cumbia is a rapidly growing style of salsa originating from Colombia. Although very similar to the other styles of salsa, Cumbia has circular momentum using sidesteps rather than a forward and back movement. The relaxed style of Cumbia makes it less sharp and hip-based but keeps the same turns and arm wraps as its cousin dances.
